RE: REQUEST FOR EXTRAORDINARY CONVENTION AND OTHER MATTERS

1. Extraordinary Convention

This is an appeal to all genuine followers members of our beloved party, United Democratic Front to urge the National Executive Committee to call for an extraordinary convention to amend our constitution.

My appeal is for the convention to amend the U.D.F. constitution so that the Party President should be the highest office and not the National Chairman.

The post of National Chairman should be a ceremonial position and should not be the head of the party.

I am sure that the ‘so called’ founders of the Party will not easily accept this open request, but it is good to face reality. Nowhere in the civilized world will you find a Presidential Candidate sponsored by a political party who has no position of authority in that party.

Part of the problems in our party arise as a result of the Party President not heading the U.D.F. Countries the U.S.A. from whom we claim to have copied democratic principles, just recently held conventions for the two major political parties namely the Republican and Democratic Parties where George Bush and John Kerry where elected as Party Leaders as well as Presidential candidates for the forth coming elections.

2. Role of UDF Chair

The mud being thrown at the Former Head of State is as a result of his active role in politics especially after his retirement.

The Mandelas, Clintons and Masires of this world are regarded as political heroes after retirement because they are non partisan in political matters. They of course belong to parties of their choice and are even called upon during election campaigns but revert to the background role thereafter.

Our former Head of State Dr. Bakili Muluzi has done a lot for this country. It would be cheap politics to ridicule him and ignore the positive contributions he has made to this country as the first democratically elected President.

Those who want to use his name to perpetuate personal agendas should realise that has gone for that and they will be exposed.

Time has come for the party to acquire assets, not only to be sponsored by the National Chairman, otherwise we shall start hero-worshiping instead of giving him the respect he so deserves. How do we account for the party, which has been in power for thirty years and yet has no assets to write home about

3. On Agnes Mizere's Resignation

On the resignation of Agnes Mizere, I think the party should welcome that. The whole country knows that the Presidents agenda in national development and economic governance is on track and for her to claim that he has wrong advisors people would suspect something sinister from her assertions. It is an insult to the President and unAfrican to claim that people are taking advantage of the President’s age and his long absence from this country. As Africans we know that wisdom comes with age. It is because of the Presidents age that has made him to come up with sound economic policies that will heal this country poverty.

Genuine members of the U.D.F. suspect that Mizere was planted the PROs office in order to distract the President. We suspect that she might have been planted by the plunderers who wanted continue to milk this country. I just want to warn all the plunderers that their time of reckoning has come and the law will visit them.

Kamuzu spent most of his life outside this country but did his long absence from Malawi affect his focus of developing this country. We do not need to remind of the number of projects that Kamuzu implemented they are there to bear testimony. That is why as members of the U.D.F. we offended by Mizere’s comments.
